The so-called sweet gene hybrids take a position between the normal sweet and extra sweet corn hybrids. They are directed to those consumers, who wish an increased sweetness, but don´t like the high sugar content of the extra sweet varieties. By a trick and taking advantage of the genetic conditions, growers have succeeded to develop varieties with normal sweet kernels combined with an exactly defined percentage of extra sweet grains on the same ear.

For the sake of completeness we may mention that the growers work on numerous additional types in order to offer further improvements to producers and consumers. However, in practice the type “extra sweet” is most common.
