Sowing methods

The low 1000 seed count weight of the onion seeds, the relatively small quantity of seeds/ ha and the high demands on regular plant arrangements make the use of modern, high-quality precision sowing machines necessary.

Apart from such "obvious requirements" as careful treatment of the seeds, exact sowing, reliability etc., it is of vital importance that the sowing depth is constant (see weed control). It is recommendable to use granulate spreaders, which permit row treatment with application of the insecticide.

Principally, the cultivation in seedbeds is nowadays most common. The width of the bed depends on the existing machines. It is important that the distance between the rows is constant and that appropriate plant stands are established. Phytosanitary and technical reasons impede the optimum use of the existing space by means of broadcast sowing.

Depending on the sowing method, which itself depends on the soil type, the seeds can be sowed in individual or double rows (3-5 cm). Double rows require a larger distance between the rows.
