Irrigation

The onion plant requires a constant water supply. Usually the branched root spreads at most to a depth of 60 cm, correpondingly the roots of young plants are even more flat. So irrigation systems with sufficient capacity are absolutely recommendable. Rain cannons have well-know disadvantages like large drops and high impact velocity with the corresponding consequences such as accumulation of mud and damage of the leafage.

More recommendable are circular sprinkler systems, ideally in a net-like arrangement (as they are commonly used in Austria). As in all populations, the following measures should be considered: if possible, use of warm water, irrigation in the early morning to avoid temperature shocks.

In general, two doses of 20 - 30 mm are sufficient for onions. For autumn sown onions a balanced water supply is especially important from August to September when they sprout.
