The
decisive influence of the photo period on the development of the
onions gives particular importance to the choice of the sowing time.
The
beginning of the maturity process is introduced by the beginning
of the bulb formation. The bulb formation itself depends, as already
explained, on the variety and on the day length. For the production
of a yielding potential a sufficient time period between the germination
and the beginning of the critical day lenth is required. Earlier
varieties mature with shorter day-length, later varieties with longer
day-length. Principally, all spring-sown onions should be sown as
early as possible, which for our regions means from the beginning
of March until mid-April. Due to the reasons mentioned above, the
early varieties should be sown at first (compare autumn sown onions).
